Blasting Abrasives: Organic Blasting Media

Corn cob media and walnut shell media are safe blasting media for cleaning delicate parts. Both materials are soft-abrasives that can easily remove foreign matter or coatings from surfaces without scratching or spoiling.

Organic Media

Treated walnut shells can be used in either wet or dry tumbling applications. Walnut shell media is typically used in either tumbling or high-energy equipment and will produce a near-mirror finish to the surface of the work object. Treated walnut shell has a Mohs hardness of 4.5 to 5.0.

Untreated walnut shells are biodegradable and porous abrasives often used in air blasting or drying applications. This material is used in air blasting applications where cleaning without damaging the substrate is critical. Untreated walnut shell media has a hardness of 4.0 Mohs.

Corn cob grit can be used in either wet or dry tumbling applications. Corn cob media is typically used in either tumbling or high-energy equipment and will produce a near-mirror finish to the work object. Corn cob is slightly harder than treated walnut shell media with a hardness of 4.5 Mohs.
